![]() ![]() If the carb has blocked vents, it won't allow in enough fuel.6. The hot exhaust pipe can easily melt vent lines shut. Check more than the ends and especially on a four-stroke. Because it's easy right now, check the carburetor vent hoses to make sure they aren't blocked. We will assume that you have spark and compression for now and continue following the route of fuel into the engine. If the carb is getting fuel, normally you would move on to compression and spark before removing the carb.5. Turn on the petcock and see if fuel runs out of the overflow lines or out of the fl oat bowl. If you did have fuel leaving the end of the fuel line, then open the fl oat bowl drain on a fourstroke, or remove the fl oat bowl cap (usually a 14 or 17mm hex on the bottom of the fl oat bowl) on a two- or four-stroke. Clean the screen and parts with carburetor cleaner.4. If the mess is bad enough, you'll need to replace or rebuild the petcock. It'll look chalky or like it has jelly on it. If the petcock is messed up, more than likely you'll see crud on the outside. An off-road bike will have a long strainer like this one while a motocross bike will have a shorter one. When the tank is empty, remove the fuel petcock from the tank.3. Make sure you work in a well-ventilated area and away from any source of combustion. Gasoline is extremely flammable and the fumes are explosive. Take off the tank and carefully empty the fuel inside into an approved container. If no fuel comes out of the petcock but there's gas in the tank, you need to get out the tools. If you get fuel with the cap off, there is a problem with the vent in the cap or with the vent hose.2. If the fl ow is slow or stopped, open the cap. Remove the fuel line from the petcock and see if fuel flows easily when you turn it on. If you're pretty sure there's fuel in the tank, don't take off the cap and look in. Whether the bike is a two- or four-stroke, it's almost always easiest to check the fuel supply first. This is my first bike, so I'm sure it's something dumb and obvious I'm missing.Tech How-To****There are few things more frustrating to a rider ready to ride than a motorcycle that won't start. plugs are getting fuel (wet to the touch) And the idle and air/fuel screws have all been dialed in back in April. Note that I have pulled the tank, and am running line from a funnel directly into the carbs, so the tank/petcock isn't the issue. I put fresh gas in, and issue is the same. Maybe the gas sat too long (even though it's e-free 93). It looked like fuel had stopped getting to left bowl, so I figured that was the issue. So I pulled the carbs and gave them a good cleaning. Initially the left side wasn't firing, but the bike would start up. I have been waiting on a custom seat to be finished, so I let the bike sit for a few weeks (maybe three) before messing with it again, and now it will not start. Fired up, both cylinders, it was idling fine, and the carbs synced. And even then, it runs for a few seconds and then dies. I'm not sure if this is the place for this, but I'm working on a '86 GS450L and I can not get it to start without a little spritz of starter fluid.
